If there is one thing I enjoyed about the 2019 CinemaCon, it was the presentations of footage and trailers by Walt Disney Pictures. Some of the movies screened by the company includes ‘Aladdin’, ‘Avengers: Endgame’, ‘The Lion King’, ‘Toy Story 4’ and a lot more. Other films lined up by Walt Disney this year include ‘Dark Phoenix’, ‘Stuber’, ‘Ford v. Ferrari’, and ‘Maleficient: Mistress of Evil’.

This years’ event seemed to take the expectations a notch higher with the slate of blockbusters expected to hit theaters later this year. A lot of exhibitors left the annual conference with the conviction that 2019 might as well be the year that old records are broken and new ones set. Last year, only a few movies crossed the billion dollar mark. However, a lot of exhibitors are tipping ‘Avengers: Endgame’, ‘Spiderman: Far From Home’, and ‘Star Wars: Episode IX’ to repeat the same feat.

Winners At The CinemaCon

It has become a tradition for every year to have winners and losers and to the best of my knowledge 2019 is not an exception. This year Disney seems unstoppable. Backed by Fox Franchise like ‘Deadpool’, ‘X-Men’, and ‘Avatar’, Disney is definitely the winner of this year’s CinemaCon. Emma Watts, the head of Fox films said it was a dizzying experience for her to present her slate for 2019 immediately after ‘Avengers: Endgame’.

Spinoffs and sequels appears to be recovering from franchise fatigue after a failed attempt by ‘Transformer: The Last Knight’ and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales’ to make major grossing. However, major installments slated for release later this year including ‘Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw’, ‘Toy Story 4’, and ‘Terminator: Dark Fate’ seems to have found a way to reignite the spark.

Losers At The 2019 CinemaCon

In a superhero movie, I will compare Disney to the main hero while all the other studios are their sidekick. One of the major challenges other studios will face is finding a release date for their movies. It will be hard for other studios to get the same cut that Disney demands from theater owners. Hence, Disney is a winner while the other studios are losers.

Theater owners still have reservations for Netflix. The problem theater owners have with Netflix is that the streaming giant has refused to let theaters screen movies exclusively for several months. However, a truce may be on its way. One of Netflix’s project, ‘The Irishman’ but Martin Scorsese wants a theatrical release for the mobster drama. Older audience also appears to be on the losing end as there appears to be slimmer offerings for them.
